Patient Care
Cystitis (Bladder Irritation)

During radiation you may experience increased urinary frequency or urgency. Also toward the end of your radiation you may experience some burning on urination. This bladder irritation is temporary. The bladder irritation will improve gradually after radiation is completed.

Things you can do during radiation:
  • Drink at least 2-3 quarts of fluid daily or drink enough fluids so your urine is a pale yellow color, to reduce risk of infection. Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and cranberry juice are effective ways to increase urine acidity, which helps decrease the chance of infection.
  • Avoid substances that might cause irritation to the bladder including anything with caffeine (coffee, tea or soft drinks), alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products.
  • Urinate often.
